It was after the holidays, so I was at the Isle late one afternoon, cleaning up the leftovers of gift opening and the tinsel the kitten had swatted off the tree.
Something caught my ear. I stopped sweeping and listened. I heard the faint drone of the pipes. Not a lament, more a tune rarely heard, but if heard at all–it was a victory call. Huh?
I flew up to Raven’s studio and the music became quite clear, cutting through a moody fog that surrounded the studio. A bagpipe. Of course it begged the question–why was someone playing the bagpipes in Raven’s studio? So I looked in.
Standing before me, droning on the bagpipes, was a most handsome gentleman, tall and regal. I caught the smell of the fresh winds off the heather and the sweet mist of the sea. He stopped playing, the bagpipes exhaling with a quiet whimper.
“Well, lass, and who are you?” he said with purr in his voice, smiling. His eyes were clear crystal blue.
I blinked and looked around. This WAS the Isle of RFyre, right? This WAS Raven’s studio, no? How in the heck did a bagpiper find his way up here? “I’m Harper, Duchess of RFyre.”
“Aye, Raven said you would probably be along. She said you have a penchant for poking around her studio.” He chuckled, and carefully disentangled himself from the pipes. “I am Sean, a friend of hers. She brought me up here to show me this kilt, but she had to run.”
Well he obviously knew Raven because here I was, poking around in her studio. Once the shock of meeting this stranger had passed, I could inspect him. He had a dark tweed kilt on–not a traditional tartan, but something earthier. It was regal with a button up suit and a handsome tweed skirt and a side kit. “I best be running as well.” He brought out a cape with a scarf and fastened it over his jacket with a bejeweled pin. “Cold out today,” he grimaced. “She made the pants for this, but you know a real kilt wearer doesn’t need that.” He winked.
I appraised him. I have to say, there is something about a man’s strong legs and the set of his hips in a kilt that moves a woman like nothing else. It’s probably the most manly clothing a gentleman can don. I have to say, Raven sure knows how to pick her friends.
He stepped out of the studio into the mist. “Nice to meet you,” I called after him, but I don’t think he heard me. He disappeared into the gloaming.
